How do I apply?

Exam periods will be posted in advance and require an online application be submitted. A practice exam will be made available so that you may study the topics and get used to the exam format in advance. More info about the exam structure can be found below.

The exact application period and exam dates will be released in the near future, but the first round of exams is expected to start sometime after the 2025 Tokyo WRC has finished. Consider subscribing to our mailing list to receive updates as soon as they’re available!

  • This pro group is primarily for those players located outside of Japan. Japan is already well serviced by some excellent pro groups and we can direct you if you need those details. WRPM is designed so that pros can participate even from areas that do not yet have a widespread riichi community.

  • Some activities may require travel. However, our organisation's overall goal has always been to assist in establishing strong, local player bases. We hope that our pro members will also be dedicated to that goal.

An objective of the World Riichi Professional Mahjong group is to build paths for progression outside of Japan. Although we're offering benefits to those who do wish to take a trip to Japan, that will not be an expectation.

In this modern climate, we will have lots of online opportunities to interact and participate as a World Riichi Professional.

  • The WRPM exam is slated to cost 75 USD/Euros depending on your region. Re-takes of the exam will be offered at 25 USD/Euros for those who don’t pass their first time. The monthly membership for those who pass will be 35 USD/Euros per month, or 350 USD/Euros per year if you pay in bulk.

These fees are used to fund WRPM and its extensive member benefits such as professional ronron accounts and inviting foreign professionals for lectures. A full list of current benefits can be found above.

  • The WRPM exam consists of multiple phases including a written exam, an interview, a skills exam, and an in person procedures exam.

The written exam tests your knowledge of the WRC rules, scoring, chinitsu, and comeback conditions over the course of a 45 minute online exam.

We will circulate sample questions and other materials so you can prepare for the exam.

You will then participate in an interview to gauge your experience, what type of a player you are, and your motivations for becoming a professional.

Following that, you will participate in a skills exam playing several hanchan on RonRon for our examiners to review and evaluate your baseline playing skills.

Lastly, there will be an in person procedures and protocol exam. Professionals who pass the other 3 sections of the exam will be on probation as provisional pros until they complete this section under the watch of a certified examiner. Your tile handling, gameplay procedures, and protocol will be tested.

World Riichi Professional Mahjong will be looking for well rounded individuals who will be able to promote the game.

You will NOT be required to speak any Japanese. However, the test will only be supported in English at least initially.

For now, the written exam will only be available online, using Quilgo, an online testing platform approved by JPML. In the future, in person testing may be available at WRPM branches across the world.

  • No, unfortunately we are not in a position to employ anyone. The word 'pro' is being used in the context of Japanese pro groups. You will have demonstrated your skills and will be certified by the World Riichi Professional Group with the eligibility to participate in exclusive opportunities. Being 'Pro' will also bring the obligation to represent the pro group and behave as a community role model. As in Japan, it is possible that a pro title may open the door for paid activities in the future, but that is not a guarantee. (Please don't quit the day job!)

  • As you won't be employed, we know you will be working any obligations around your work and family life. Although there will be some expectations for activity, we will demonstrate as much flexibility as possible.

  • We are building from the ground up, so as of now you have the opportunity to be in the first cohort of World Riichi Professionals. At the moment, WRMP consists of 6 provisional pros paving the way for future exam takers.

To ensure that people coming in have the highest-quality experience with us, we will bring people in in small cohorts. So even if you are not successful for the first onboarding, please hold on for the next cohort! Or if perhaps right now doesn't work for you, bookmark us and apply later.

We don't have a specific number of pros we can have in our group. The size of the group will depend on making sure we are properly meeting member expectations. As the number of pros in different regions across the world expands, WRPM may establish branches to facilitate regional leagues at major mahjong hubs.

  • WRPM has a commitment towards growing the mahjong community as a whole, pro or amateur alike. For those who wish to get a taste of what it is like to be part of a professional group, or who simply want to improve their skills, pro-ama events and content will be offered.

  • We are currently partnered with the Japan Professional Mahjong League, Nihon Pro Mahjong, and Mahjong Union. We hope to grow that list in the future!

  • The World Riichi Pro Test will be set up in the same way as those of professional organizations in Japan. You will be evaluated on mahjong knowledge, scoring capabilities, procedures and attitude. Although we are making arrangements to accommodate people who are unable to easily travel to major hubs, you will be held to the same standards as new professionals everywhere in the world.
We are cultivating close relationships with all of our partners in Japan to ensure that our professionals are accepted and treated the same as our counterparts in Japan and that also means access and qualification to tournaments and professional leagues for those with the means to travel. There will be additional resources available so that you will feel confident in sitting at the table in professional tournaments everywhere in the world.

How does the WRPM Exam Work?

The WRPM exam is designed to test the baseline skills we are looking for in our potential pros. It covers practical knowledge that all pros should be aware of and takes a multi-phase approach to properly examine different aspects of both gameplay and character from each applicant. Each exam is broken up into 6 phases that are explained in detail in the diagram to the right. Following your application, you will take a written exam, an interview, and a skill exam before you may qualify as a provisional pro. Then, you must complete an in person procedures and protocol exam to confirm full pro status. The exam will be offered biannually, although our first round of public exams may differ based on demand.
