Background
Initially, I thought Riichi mahjong was just another straightforward game where I win by completing the hand first. However, I became captivated by it as I learned more about the rules and how the pros play in competitions. I discovered the immense depth of strategy and technique required to win (with good luck) as well as to become a professional player.
To me, playing Riichi mahjong is crucial to strike the right balance between defense and attack in every hanchan. Winning is a combination of tile efficiency, hand building, good timing on calls and Riichi, reading opponents through their discards, patience, luck and risk-management. In competition, survival in defense play is just as important as winning.
There is so much I can learn from practicing and competing and I like very much to pursue this journey further.
